House of Our Culture
Established May 2003
"Our mission is to preserve the culture and history of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians from original inhabitation to present-day for the Sovereign Nation of Soboba."
Miiyu (mee you), the cultural center, Cham-Mix Poki (House of Our Culture) was founded by Tribal Member and Cultural Program Director, Charlene Ryan in May 2003. This was made possible though the donation of over 400 Native American books by the late Dr. Dorothy Lonewolf Miller (Blackfeet), Director of Scientific Analysis Corporation based in San Francisco , California . The LoneWolf reading room is home to a growing collection of Native American books as well as research materials focused on the Soboba and Luiseño Culture. Our collection includes an assortment of resource materials and historic photographs of Soboba as well as artifacts.
Language
Language is culture, language tells us who we are and where we have been. As a community we believe in language revitalization as one of the traditions that strengthens our identity as people from Sabova (Winter Place).
Luiseño Language Classes are taught by instructor, Bill Madrigal. are in full swing. We encourage Soboba tribal members to bring the whole family to learn conversational Luiseño. In addition to tribal members and their families we also include the Soboba Preschool faculty who use Luiseņo in their lesson plans and converse with the preschool students. Please call 951-487-9075 to ask about classes and language Cd's.
